Kashmiri Naqashi Tradition Sustained by 19-Year-Old Srinagar Youth

A 19-year-old student from Srinagar is working to preserve Kashmir’s rich handicraft heritage by learning the traditional art of Naqashi alongside his studies. Danish Hussain, a resident of Hawal in Srinagar and a Class 12 student, spends his evenings mastering the intricate craft of copper engraving, a centuries-old art form deeply rooted in Kashmiri culture.

Despite balancing academics and daily responsibilities, Danish remains committed to learning the delicate techniques of Naqashi under skilled artisans. His dedication reflects the growing interest among Kashmiri youth in reviving traditional crafts that are slowly fading with time.

Naqashi, known for its detailed floral and ornamental engravings on copperware, has long been an important part of Kashmir’s artistic identity. However, artisans say the craft faces challenges due to declining interest and changing market trends.

Danish believes that young people must actively participate in preserving such traditional skills to protect Kashmir’s cultural legacy for future generations. Through his efforts, he hopes to inspire more youth to connect with local art forms and promote handmade Kashmiri craftsmanship.

His journey highlights how passion and perseverance among the younger generation can help sustain the Valley’s centuries-old handicraft traditions while creating awareness about the importance of cultural preservation.
