J&K PDD Achieves National Recognition in PM Surya Ghar Implementation

Jammu and Kashmir’s Power Development Department (PDD) has secured the second position nationally under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, earning recognition from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) for outstanding performance in rooftop solar applications, installations and inspections during May 2026.

The award was presented during the national event marking two years of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana in New Delhi. The recognition on behalf of Jammu and Kashmir was received by Mahmood Ahmad Shah, Managing Director of Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL).

The achievement reflects the coordinated efforts of the J&K Power Development Department, distribution companies KPDCL and JPDCL, district administrations, field staff, empanelled vendors and consumers in advancing rooftop solar adoption across the Union Territory.PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, the Government of India’s flagship rooftop solar programme, aims to provide solar power systems to one crore households across the country between April 2024 and March 2027. Nationally, more than 33.57 lakh rooftop solar installations have been completed under the scheme so far.

In J&K, implementation commenced in July 2024 and has witnessed steady growth since then. According to official figures, 98,601 applications have been registered on the national portal, including 69,184 applications under KPDCL and 29,402 under JPDCL.

Of these, 33,987 rooftop solar systems have been successfully commissioned across the Union Territory, comprising 21,255 installations in Kashmir and 12,730 in Jammu.

The installations have added 121.61 MW of renewable energy capacity, including 76.92 MW in the Kashmir region and 44.68 MW in the Jammu region, contributing significantly towards clean energy generation and reducing dependence on conventional power sources.

Officials said a cumulative Central Financial Assistance (CFA) of ₹258.18 crore has been directly transferred to beneficiaries, while the UT administration has additionally provided ₹10 crore as subsidy support.

Affordable financing has emerged as a key driver of the scheme’s success. J&K Bank has played a leading role in facilitating rooftop solar adoption by extending loans at interest rates as low as six per cent. Of the 45,321 loan applications received under the scheme, 27,075 have already been sanctioned or disbursed.

More than 80 per cent of the rooftop solar installations in Jammu and Kashmir have been financed through these low-interest loans, significantly easing the financial burden on consumers.

Vendor participation has also expanded substantially. While nearly 900 vendors are registered nationally on the PM Surya Ghar portal, Jammu and Kashmir currently has more than 300 active empanelled vendors, strengthening competition, improving service delivery and generating employment opportunities in the renewable energy sector.

The month of May 2026 witnessed particularly strong performance, with 4,559 fresh applications registered, 2,579 rooftop solar installations completed and 2,688 inspections conducted by distribution companies to facilitate timely subsidy disbursement.

The department noted that rooftop solar installations in Jammu and Kashmir registered a 77 per cent increase compared to May 2025, highlighting growing consumer confidence and accelerating adoption of clean energy solutions.
