J&K Expands Sports Infrastructure With World-Class Facilities in Srinagar

In a major boost to the sports infrastructure of Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated world-class sporting facilities at Gindun, Rajbagh, Srinagar, developed at a cost of more than ₹30 crore.

The centre features an Olympic-sized 10-lane swimming pool, a training pool and an international-standard gymnastics hall. It is expected to give athletes in the Valley access to facilities that meet national and international benchmarks.

Facilities built for champions

The Olympic-sized swimming pool, with ten lanes, is designed to host competitive events and serious training. A separate training pool will help beginners, juniors and trainee swimmers build skills before moving on to the main pool.

The gymnastics hall, built to international standards, is among the most notable additions. Gymnastics requires specialised equipment, height clearance and safe landing areas, which have been limited in the region so far. The new hall is expected to open doors for young gymnasts who previously had few options to train locally.

A step towards sporting excellence

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister is expected to have highlighted the government’s commitment to strengthening the sporting ecosystem in J&K and giving young athletes the support they need to compete at the highest level.

Sports administrators have long pointed out that talent in the region is not in short supply, but quality infrastructure and training access have often held athletes back. With the new centre, swimmers and gymnasts in Srinagar can now train closer to home.

Opportunities for youth

The facility is likely to benefit students, club athletes and aspiring professionals alike. Regular access to a standard pool and gymnastics hall can improve technique, fitness and competitive readiness.

Beyond elite sport, the centre can also promote swimming as a life skill and encourage fitness among the wider public, particularly children and young adults. For girls and young women, accessible, well-equipped facilities can make it easier to take up sport in a safe, structured environment.

Hosting events and building a sporting culture

With an Olympic-sized pool and an international-standard hall, Srinagar can now aim to host district, regional and national-level competitions. Such events bring athletes, coaches and spectators to the city, adding to sporting activity and giving local talent exposure to stronger competition.

Officials have said that continued investment in sports facilities is a priority, as the Union Territory seeks to build a lasting sporting culture and improve its performance in national championships.

Looking ahead

Coaches, athletes and sports associations have welcomed the development, saying that well-maintained facilities, trained coaches and regular competitions will be key to making the most of the infrastructure.

The success of the centre will depend on sustained upkeep, qualified coaching staff and open access for young athletes from across the region. If managed well, the Gindun facility could become a training hub that produces swimmers and gymnasts capable of representing J&K and India on bigger stages.

For the Valley’s young sportspersons, the new centre marks a significant step forward. As the facilities open their doors, the hope is that more children will take up sport and that more champions will emerge from Kashmir.
