The Himalayan Welfare Organization (HWO) Pahalgam on Sunday honoured 34 local youth for their heroic efforts in rescuing tourists during the April 22 terror attack in Baisaran, Pahalgam.
The attack claimed the lives of 25 tourists and a local pony operator.
However, the swift and courageous response of local guides, adventure operators, and pony handlers prevented further loss of life and drew widespread praise across the country. During a ceremony held in Pahalgam, the HWO facilitated the brave individuals for their selfless service.
The event was attended by local residents and members of civil society.
Waheed ur Rehman Parra, MLA from Pulwama and the chief guest at the event, lauded the youth for their courage. “You risked your lives to send a powerful message of humanity,” he said.
HWO Chairman Mushtaq Pahalgami commended the rescuers for upholding the values of Kashmiriyat. “Because of these brave youths, we can hold our heads high. They have truly strengthened the spirit of Kashmir,” he said.
A two-minute silence was observed in memory of the deceased, including Syed Adil Shah, a local pony operator who lost his life while saving tourists.
Prayers were offered for the departed souls and solidarity was expressed with the bereaved families.
