The world-famous tourist destination Sonamarg in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district has witnessed 79,825 tourists over the past two and a half months, drawn by its pristine landscapes and natural beauty.
Official figures reveal that 39,605 tourists visited Sonamarg in July alone. This included 25,281 domestic visitors from various Indian states, 159 foreign nationals, and 15,165 local tourists. In August, the number of visitors stood at 32,139, comprising 12,124 domestic tourists, 304 foreigners, and 19,711 locals. From September 1 to 16, a total of 6,423 tourists arrived, including 2,548 domestic travellers, 278 foreigners, and 3,597 locals.
Foreign tourists hailed from countries including Colombia, the UK, Taiwan, Australia, France, Malaysia, Palestine, Turkey, South Africa, and Spain, according to officials.
While tourist footfall remains steady, stakeholders in the sector continue to face difficulties. Abdul Majid, a local cab driver, said, “After the Pahalgam attack, our livelihood has taken a serious hit. The decline in visitors has directly affected our earnings.”
Transporters expressed concern over their financial stability, many of whom had purchased vehicles through bank loans expecting sustained income from tourism. Bashir Ahmad, a transporter, shared, “We had hoped to repay our loans and support our families, but with limited work, we are under immense mental stress.”
Hotel owners also voiced their challenges. “Maintenance and operational costs are rising, but business has not met our expectations. It is becoming increasingly difficult to manage,” said a hotelier.
Despite these setbacks, locals remain hopeful that the upcoming autumn season will bring a fresh surge in tourist arrivals and help revive the sector.
