Fresh snowfall across Kashmir has triggered a sharp revival in winter and adventure tourism, with popular destinations like Gulmarg and Sonamarg witnessing heavy tourist footfall at the start of the New Year.In Gulmarg, skiing activities returned to life after weeks of dull weather, drawing adventure enthusiasts from across the country. Snow-covered slopes were abuzz with beginners and professional skiers, while ski instructors, guides and equipment rental operators resumed work.
Tourists described the experience as safe, well-organised and worth recommending. The Gulmarg Gondola recorded heavy footfall, particularly during morning hours. Despite long queues, visitors praised efficient crowd management and safety measures. Many also appreciated the hands-on supervision by the Cable Car Corporation officials, which helped boost public confidence.
Tourism stakeholders in Gulmarg expressed optimism for the season ahead. Hoteliers reported increased bookings, especially for weekends and holidays, with several establishments witnessing high occupancy. Tour operators said enquiries surged after snowfall visuals circulated widely on social media. Sledge operators also welcomed the fresh snow, saying it had restored their livelihoods after a prolonged dry spell.
Meanwhile, Sonamarg witnessed a record influx of tourists on New Year 2026 as the Tourism Department organised a grand cultural programme to mark the occasion. Thousands of domestic and local tourists gathered to enjoy cultural performances amid snow-laden surroundings, giving a fresh push to winter tourism in the region.
Traditionally closed for nearly six months due to heavy snowfall, Sonamarg has remained accessible year-round since the inauguration of the Sonamarg Tunnel by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January last year. The improved connectivity has opened new avenues for tourism and economic activity during the winter months.
Officials said the unprecedented tourist turnout in Sonamarg and Gulmarg at the beginning of the year is expected to provide a major boost to Kashmir’s tourism sector and strengthen winter and adventure tourism in the months ahead.
Tourists visiting both destinations described Kashmir as peaceful and safe, urging others to visit and experience the Valley’s winter charm.
