USBRL Marks Army’s First Freight Train Operation Success

In a landmark development, the Indian Army has successfully operated its first dedicated freight train on the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), significantly boosting operational preparedness in the challenging Himalayan terrain.

The freight train, which ran from BD Bari to Anantnag, carried 753 metric tonnes of Advance Winter Stocking (AWS) supplies for Army units and formations in Jammu and Kashmir. This marks a pivotal shift in the Army’s logistics strategy ahead of the harsh winter months.

“This freight train is the first exclusive train for the Indian Army and will be a game changer in the Army’s Advance Winter Stocking (AWS) operations in difficult Himalayan terrain,” said Army PRO SuneelBartwal.

The initiative represents a breakthrough in both advanced winter logistics and civil–military collaboration. By utilizing the USBRL for military freight movement, the Army is modernizing its supply chain while also leveraging existing civilian infrastructure.

Apart from military logistics, the freight train will also be used to transport Kashmiri apples to markets across the country. This dual-use approach not only enhances the Army’s winter preparedness but also brings direct economic benefits to local communities.

Farmers in Kashmir, who have long suffered losses due to road closures caused by landslides and floods, will now be able to transport their produce more reliably and efficiently, ensuring better income and livelihood stability.

“The Indian Army’s use of rail infrastructure for both military and civilian purposes marks a significant step toward strengthening resilience, connectivity, and prosperity in the region,” Bartwal added.
