Sonamarg Gears Up for Adventure Sports Tourism

Sonamarg in Central Kashmir is gearing up for a major push in winter adventure tourism, with the Tourism Department collaborating with the Youth Services and Sports Department to organise a series of sports events aimed at attracting visitors and promoting local talent.

A senior tourism official said several adventure activities are already underway in Sonamarg, including skiing, skating, and ice hockey on a small scale. However, the full schedule of seven planned adventure events has not yet been launched due to low snowfall this season.

Weather forecasts indicate strong chances of snowfall around January 22. Once the region receives sufficient snow, authorities plan to host larger and more structured winter sports events, which are expected to boost tourist footfall and extend winter stays.

Sonamarg Chief Executive Officer Bilal Mukhtar Dar said the destination is already seeing a steady influx of tourists, which will grow further after fresh snowfall.

Dar also highlighted the impact of improved connectivity. Following the opening of the all-weather tunnel, Sonamarg has become more accessible during winter months, easing travel and benefiting local residents. He noted that pony handlers, sledge operators, and ski service providers are already seeing increased earnings due to better tourist access.

Once snowfall stabilizes, the Youth Services and Sports Department plans to organize ice hockey, snow skating, and other winter adventure events in Sonamarg. These initiatives aim to engage local youth and position the area as a prime winter sports destination.

Officials added that the success of winter tourism in Gulmarg over the past two years has inspired similar efforts in Sonamarg. With better access, planned events, and growing tourist interest, Sonamarg is expected to play a key role in Central Kashmir’s winter tourism economy this season.
