Kashmir Farmers Gain from Faster, More Efficient Fruit Transportation

The Kashmir Fruit Parcel Train service provides reliable connectivity to major markets across the country, facilitating smoother movement of Kashmir's horticultural produce, including its world-renowned apples.

A Dedicated Service Since 2025

The dedicated service, known as JPP-RCS, forms the backbone of the Rail Parcel Service Kashmir network and has been operating successfully since September 2025. It connects Badgam (BDGM) with Adarsh Nagar Delhi (ANDI) via Jammu, with an intermediate stoppage at Bari Brahmana. The service was specifically designed to address the transportation needs of Kashmir’s horticulture sector, offering a dedicated rail corridor that bypasses many of the logistical bottlenecks associated with road transport, especially during peak harvest periods.

Officials of the Directorate said this cost-effective, time-efficient, and all-weather rail facility assumes considerable importance for the horticulture sector, particularly during the fruit harvesting and marketing season, when timely dispatch of perishable produce is critical for growers and traders alike. The Rail Parcel Service Kashmir route provides reliable connectivity to major markets across the country, facilitating smoother movement and marketing of Kashmir’s horticultural produce, including its world-renowned apples.

Strong Performance Since Launch

The Kashmir Fruit Parcel Train has emerged as an important logistics option for transporting apples and other horticultural produce from the Valley to major markets.

According to data shared by the Directorate, Train No. 00462, operating from Badgam to Adarsh Nagar Delhi, has so far successfully transported 332 VPs (Vans/Parcel wagons) carrying approximately 7,400 tonnes of produce, including apples, e-commerce consignments, and other mixed goods. On the return journey, an even larger volume has been recorded, with 786 VPs carrying approximately 17,450 tonnes, mainly comprising e-commerce and mixed goods.

These figures, officials noted, reflect the growing utility and operational efficiency of the Rail Parcel Service Kashmir corridor since its introduction, underscoring the increasing reliance of traders and businesses on this mode of transport for both outbound horticultural shipments and inbound goods movement into the Valley.Advantages Over Conventional Transport

Unlike road transport, which remains vulnerable to weather disruptions, landslides, and traffic congestion along the Jammu-Srinagar highway — particularly during the monsoon and winter months — the Rail Parcel Service Kashmir offers a consistent, all-weather alternative. This is expected to significantly reduce transit delays and post-harvest losses for perishable produce such as apples, which form the backbone of Kashmir’s horticulture economy and a major source of livelihood for lakhs of growers.

By ensuring faster and more predictable delivery timelines, the service also aims to strengthen the competitiveness of Kashmiri produce in markets across northern and central India, helping growers secure better prices and reduce dependency on intermediaries reliant on road-based logistics.

Benefits for Kashmir Fruit Growers: The Kashmir Fruit Parcel Train can provide growers with a dependable alternative during the busy harvesting season. Faster and more predictable transportation can help reduce delays between orchards, collection centres and major markets. For perishable fruits such as apples, reliable logistics are particularly important because extended transit times can affect freshness, quality and market value. Wider use of rail-based parcel transportation could also help reduce congestion on major road corridors while giving growers and traders another option for reaching buyers outside Jammu and Kashmir.

Call for Wider Utilization

Greater use of the Kashmir Fruit Parcel Train could help improve supply-chain efficiency and provide growers with a more predictable way to reach markets outside Jammu and Kashmir.

The Directorate has accordingly called upon fruit growers, traders, and other stakeholders to make optimum use of the dedicated rail facility for the transportation of horticultural produce, particularly during the ongoing peak harvesting season. Wider adoption of the Rail Parcel Service Kashmir option, officials said, would not only ease pressure on road infrastructure but also provide growers and traders with a more economical and dependable logistics choice as the fruit season progresses.
