Kashmir Sees Rising Momentum in Premium Rose Oil Cultivation

Kashmir’s growing rose oil industry is emerging as a promising contributor to the local economy, with premium-quality rose oil produced in the Valley gaining increasing attention for its purity, fragrance, and commercial value.

Farmers and entrepreneurs involved in rose cultivation say the demand for Kashmiri rose oil has been steadily rising in the cosmetic, perfume, wellness, and herbal product markets. The development is not only creating new economic opportunities for local growers but also encouraging diversification in Kashmir’s agricultural sector.

Known for its favourable climate and fertile soil, Kashmir has long been famous for horticulture and floriculture. Now, rose farming and essential oil extraction are opening new avenues for income generation, especially for small-scale farmers and youth entrepreneurs.

Rose oil, often referred to as “liquid gold” due to its high market value and labour-intensive extraction process, is widely used in perfumes, skincare products, aromatherapy, and traditional wellness practices. Producers in Kashmir believe the Valley’s natural conditions give the roses a unique aroma and quality that distinguish them from many other varieties.

Local farmers say the increasing interest in Kashmiri rose oil has also brought attention to rural farming communities, where traditional agricultural practices are now being combined with modern processing techniques to improve quality and production.

Experts believe that with proper government support, branding, training, and access to larger markets, Kashmir’s rose oil industry has the potential to become an important segment of the region’s economy. The sector is also generating seasonal employment opportunities and encouraging more people to explore floriculture as a sustainable livelihood option.

As Kashmir continues to diversify its agricultural and horticultural landscape, the rise of premium rose oil production reflects the Valley’s growing potential in high-value natural and organic products.
