Pulwama Emerges as a Stage for Young Women Hockey Stars

The sound of sticks striking the ball and the cheers of spectators filled Hockey Turf Pulwama as the Under-19 Girls Hockey Tournament got under way, bringing together eight teams from across Jammu and Kashmir in a showcase of young female talent.

The tournament, which features squads from different districts of the Union Territory, is being seen as a significant step towards building a stronger pathway for girls in competitive sport. Organisers say the event is designed not only to identify promising players but also to nurture confidence, discipline and leadership among participants.

Young athletes, many of them in their mid-teens, arrived at the venue in team colours, warming up on the turf as families, coaches, teachers and local residents gathered along the sidelines. The atmosphere, officials said, reflected a growing acceptance of girls’ participation in sport in the region.

A platform for emerging talent

Speaking at the opening ceremony, organisers said the tournament aims to give girls a structured platform to compete at a high level, something that has often been difficult to access, particularly for players from smaller towns and rural areas.

“Sport is a powerful tool for personal growth,” an official associated with the event said. “When a girl steps onto the field, she learns to take decisions under pressure, to work with a team, and to handle both victory and defeat with grace. These are lessons that stay with her for life.”

The eight participating teams will compete over the coming days in a format that gives each side multiple opportunities to showcase its skills. Matches are being played on the Pulwama turf, a facility that has emerged as a hub for hockey activity in the region in recent years.Beyond the scoreboard

While the competition is expected to be spirited, organisers stressed that the larger objective extends well beyond trophies. By bringing together players from different parts of J&K, the tournament also offers an opportunity for cultural exchange, friendship and exposure to different styles of play.

Coaches accompanying the teams said such events are vital for development. Regular match experience, they noted, helps young players sharpen technique, improve fitness and build the mental resilience needed to progress to state and national levels.

“The girls have been training hard for weeks,” said one coach. “For many of them, this is among the biggest stages they have played on. You can see the excitement, but also the determination.”

Parents present at the venue expressed pride and optimism. Several said they had travelled long distances to watch their daughters play, and that support for girls’ sporting ambitions within families and communities has been steadily increasing.Encouraging more girls to take up sport

A key goal of the tournament is to inspire more girls to consider sport as a serious pursuit. Officials said visible, well-organised events help challenge long-held perceptions and show younger girls that athletic careers are achievable.

Sports administrators have long argued that participation in team games contributes to academic focus, physical health and self-assurance. Hockey, in particular, with its emphasis on teamwork, speed and strategy, is seen as an ideal vehicle for developing leadership qualities.

The presence of young players from across the region also sends a message about the depth of talent available in J&K. Observers noted that with proper infrastructure, coaching and opportunities, athletes from the region can make their mark at the national level.

Infrastructure and the road ahead

The Hockey Turf Pulwama has become a symbol of the push to expand sporting facilities in the area. Officials said continued investment in grounds, equipment and trained coaches will be crucial to sustaining the momentum generated by tournaments like this one.

Organisers expressed hope that the event would become a regular fixture on the sporting calendar, growing in scale each year and drawing even more teams in the future.

As the opening day concluded, players left the field tired but smiling, many already looking ahead to their next match. For the spectators who witnessed the action, one thing was clear: the young women of J&K are ready to take their place in the spotlight.

The tournament will continue over the coming days, culminating in the final, where the champions of the Under-19 category will be crowned.
